Carl Stewart began collecting textile fragments from discarded mattresses in September 1996. Some fragments have been left as they were found, others embellished with paint, foil, metallic thread, pearls, beads and sequins. The fragments are reassembled into shimmering quilts, becoming glorifications of domestic situations and daily rituals.

By Wendy Feldberg, Karen Goetzinger, Carmella Karijo Rother
July 31- October 28, 2007
In this exhibit the artists seek to pull textiles out from under familiar assumptions around wearability and functionality. The artists are not seeking to clothe the bodies or cover beds and armchairs, but engage visitors in an interaction with textiles in light of their collective passion for fibre as an art medium.
Feldberg's surface design work explores the expressive possibilities in layered threadplay; Goetzinger seeks to interpret the quietly deep and powerful contrasts that speak to her from vintage oriental textile; Karijo Rother's passion for colour and form culminates in energetic and meditative compositions alive with light and movement.
